How to Respond to a Notice from Your Landlord
Prerequisite: Video 2A
Before attending this class, please watch Video 2A—it will give you the foundation you need. Without it, the class may feel confusing.
In this session, you’ll learn how to respond if you’ve received:
- A 3-day notice to pay rent or quit
- A 3-day notice to cure covenant or quit
- A 30-, 60-, or 120-day notice to quit
- Any other notice from your landlord

TEP for Beginners
Prerequisite for TEP Counseling (or watch videos 1A, 1B, 1C).
Since 2003, the Tenant Empowerment Program (TEP) has achieved a 96–98% success rate for participants who reach Step 10. Each year, 95–99% of those participants are represented at trial. While nothing can guarantee the outcome of your case, the more effort you put into the program, the stronger your chances of success.
The TEP for Beginners class is the foundation of that success. It’s offered three times a week on Zoom:
- Mondays at 4:00 PM
- Wednesdays at 4:00 PM
- Saturdays at 8:00 AM
In this 2-hour introduction, you’ll learn the basics of participating in TEP:
- How to rename yourself properly in Zoom
- How to create your Personal Information Paragraph (PIP)
- How to complete both online and in-person intake
This session (or watching Videos 1A, 1B, and 1C) is required before attending TEP classes on:

An EDN attorney (if available) attends this class to counsel TEP students who have upcoming court dates and/or deadlines. Please ensure you watch all the introductory TEP videos (1A, 1B, 1C) or attend the TEP for Beginners session before joining the Counseling class. How to Prepare for Your First Day of Court
Prerequisite: Video 2H
Before attending this class, please watch Video 2H.
This class will help you know what to expect during your first court appearance and how to prepare for the best possible outcome. You’ll learn:
- Why it’s important to observe the court before your own hearing
- What to wear and when to arrive
- How to properly check in with the court clerk
- What to say—and, just as importantly, what not to say
- How to use the right tone when speaking in court
At the end of class, you’ll be able to ask general questions about preparing for court. Please note: no attorneys are present, and no legal advice will be provided.

Role-playing Workshop
Watch video 2H before coming to this class.
This session will teach you the speeches we recommend for responding to questions from the landlord’s attorney or the judge/commissioner. EDN staff will role-play these parts and give you the opportunity to practice. The more you practice, the more confident and prepared you’ll be in court.

The jury won’t see your documents if you can’t get them into evidence. In this workshop, we’ll:
- Review your exhibits to see if additional documents are needed
- Show you step by step how to enter your documents into evidence

Opening Statement Class
In-person only – see the front page for the address. Be sure to bring your binder!
In this class, we’ll review your case, identify your strongest defenses, and show you how to tell your story in trial—starting with the most crucial part of any jury trial: the Opening Statement.
You’ll also hear other students practice their opening statements and have the chance to give and receive feedback. By the end of this class, you’ll leave with a written opening statement that you—or your lawyer, if available—can deliver to the jury at trial.

Prerequisites:
- Ideally, you’ve completed a full intake in our office (4–8 hours), which produces a binder containing substantive jury instructions and a verdict form.
- Check Tab 6 of your binder to verify that a verdict form is included. If it’s missing, text your Team to complete Intake Part 2.
What You’ll Learn:
- How to understand the essential court documents included in your trial binder (Tabs 1–10)
- The purpose and use of the Statement of the Case, Witness List, Exhibit List, Jury Instructions, and Verdict Form
- How to properly organize these documents for trial
