Flying Standby
Our appointments are often fully booked. We offer you the opportunity to do what we call 'Fly Standby'. If your deadline is approaching, you may come to the office and request to Fly Standby. This means that if someone with an appointment does not show up, you will be given their slot.
You should be patient and be prepared to wait. Please bring a snack and a device to watch our videos while waiting.
Standby Policies Starting 7/7/2025:
Standby for Intake:1. You arrive no earlier than 8:45 AM and no later than 9 AM.2. Scan the QR code on the flyer at the door.3. Wait to be called.4. From 9 AM to 11 AM, we triage based on urgency (what is the next deadline) and what time you scanned in.5. By 11 AM, we will tell you whether we will be able to see you that day.6. If we don’t have enough slots, we will give you an appointment before your deadline.7. If we don’t have an appointment before your deadline, we will either ask you to go to another resource OR, if no other resource exists for what you need, we will ask you to fly standby the next day.
Standby for Step 10:
1. You are given a Step 10 appointment at intake. If the Intake Paralegal does not give you a Step 10 appointment, remind them. DO NOT miss that appointment. Rescheduling is nearly impossible because all the available slots fill up quickly.
2. If, for some unavoidable reason that is more important than not ending up homeless, you miss your Step 10 appointment, you can request one on your PIP Text Thread. If your Team can’t get you in, you can fly standby for Step 10, 3 days before your next deadline, which is either your next court date or the “meet and confer” deadline the judge gave you.
Standby for Step 15:
At Intake, we complete your Trial Notebook. At Step 10 we focus on the witnesses and exhibits including making sure you have identified all witnesses and exhibits and that they are in your notebook.
At Step 15, we merge your notebook with the landlord’s notebook.
When you get the trial documents from the other side, text your Team on your PIP Text String. The trial documents include a Statement of the case, witness list, exhibit list, jury instructions, and a verdict form. If your Team is unable to get you in before your deadline, fly standby for Step 15 3 days before your deadline. This is usually the court appearance AFTER the judge gave you the “meet and confer” deadline.
